2023 Holtville graduate Caroline Hickey has truly demonstrated the profound impact that Athletic Trainers have on student-athletes. After years of playing soccer, Hickey found herself with extra time when her senior season ended.

Holtville Athletic Trainer Samantha Yates suggested she try rowing, leading Hickey to join the University of Alabama’s rowing team.

“We joked about it for a week or so. One afternoon I just filled out the questionnaire and forms for tryouts...and then started the tryout process!”

Transitioning from soccer to rowing, Hickey faced physical challenges, especially due to her 5’3” stature compared to taller teammates.

“Strength is definitely something that helps a lot with that. You have to learn to push your limits, but also know them.”

Hickey credited her success to her supportive teammates and knowledgeable coaches.

“My teammates are such a blessing...It’s a team sport that requires everyone...We are all working toward the same goal.” 

Despite only freshmen not typically traveling, Hickey competed in a Tuscaloosa race, helping her team to a first-place finish and earning the title of Freshman of the Year.

Reflecting on her journey, Hickey acknowledged the significant influence of Athletic Trainer Samantha Yates. Taking Sports Medicine classes and shadowing Yates ignited her passion for the field.

“Sam poured into me so much and has had a huge impact on me."

Yates’ encouragement pushed Hickey to attend the University of Alabama, despite initial reservations.

Hickey’s gratitude extends to her family and friends for their unwavering support. This summer, she will intern at Holtville High School before starting an internship with the University of Alabama Baseball team.

Her academic goal is to earn a master’s degree in athletic training. Hickey’s story exemplifies the influential role ATs play in shaping the futures of their athletes.
