ATs Venture Beyond Traditional Settings, Into NASCAR and Beyond!
The world of athletic training has expanded beyond the familiar sidelines and courts of high school and college sports, stretching into realms as varied as the military, professional sports, and even the fast-paced world of NASCAR.
Trevor Matot, a student from the University of New England (UNE) Class of ’24, really shines a light on this new frontier. Matot embarked on an unconventional journey by completing his clinical coursework with Trackhouse Racing, a NASCAR Cup Series motorsports group, in Concord, North Carolina.
Instead of the typical sports setting, Matot spent nearly four months working in the scorching heat to train and rehabilitate the pit crew, the essential yet often overlooked component of racing teams.
"It was really interesting to watch the pit crew as an Athletic Trainer."
He was fascinated by the crew's precision and coordination during the frenetic 8-second pit stops, a stark contrast to the sports injuries he was accustomed to treating.
This unique experience didn't just broaden Matot's horizons; it also showcased the versatility of athletic training as a profession. UNE's Athletic Training 3+2 degree program, which Matot is a part of, enables students to earn both a B.S. in Health Sciences and an M.S. in Athletic Training in five years.
Graduates have found opportunities in diverse settings, from strength and conditioning and occupational health to major league franchises in baseball and basketball. Some have even supported athletes at the Olympic Games.
Christopher Rizzo, D.A.T., clinical professor and coordinator of clinical education for the Athletic Training program at UNE, emphasizes the emerging roles of athletic trainers in various sectors.
"Such settings include the military, municipalities, industry, and American motorsports."
Rizzo highlighted the program's aim to provide immersive experiences that align with students' passions and career aspirations.
As Matot prepares to graduate, his experience in North Carolina not only enriched his professional skills but also left a profound impact on his approach to patient care. The sense of camaraderie and mutual care he witnessed among the crew members will influence his future practice.
This evolving landscape of athletic training offers a promising horizon for new graduates, proving that the field extends far beyond the confines of traditional sports.
Whether it's the roar of a NASCAR race, the buzz of a major league game, or the rigor of military training, or even in an industrial factory, Athletic Trainers are proving to be indispensable in supporting the physical well-being of individuals across a spectrum of high-pressure environments.
