Erin Schmerge, an Athletic Trainer with Grand Lake Health System assigned to the New Knoxville Schools, is deeply passionate about her role.

“My job changes daily. From injury management, rehabilitation, wound care, to being the first responder during emergencies, there's never a dull moment.”

Athletic Trainer Erin Schmerge 2Athletic Trainers are equipped with a wide array of tools and skills. And while they are qualified healthcare providers, they also help student athletes with nutrition, body mechanics, hydration, and even mental health.

Despite their expansive skill set, Schmerge acknowledged that many often underestimate the capabilities of Athletic Trainers.

“I like to tell people my job differs from day to day. That’s why I love it. When students shadow me, they get to witness firsthand the depth and breadth of what I do.”

She added that a day when she is only providing water to athletes is the best kind... since it means no one was injured.

"After school I have kids coming in doing treatments, being preventative, rehab, or they have an injury and we’re trying to get them to play again.”

She said that in addition to this, they’ll also handle emergencies on the field. They deal with wound care and even plan and practice for a cardiac arrest.

“We’re trained in all of that to do emergency management on scene.”

Beyond the technical aspects of her job, Schmerge emphasizes the significant emotional role Athletic Trainers play.

With her open-door policy, she offers a listening ear to students going through personal challenges.

“While it might not be the primary role, being there for students emotionally is crucial.”

For Schmerge, the most rewarding aspect of her job is the relationships she builds with the athletes. Reflecting on her two-year tenure at the school, she says:

“I might have my own kids at home, but at school, I have my bigger kids.”

Building trust with the coaches, parents, and athletes is paramount, and she believes that these relationships are the foundation of an effective athletic training program.

In a world where the physical and emotional well-being of student-athletes is pivotal, the role of Athletic Trainers becomes even more indispensable.

As schools and communities recognize the importance of this role, it is crucial to address the challenges facing the profession to ensure that student athletes get the care and support they need.
