Behind the Stunts: Amberly Perrins Supports BYU Cheer On and Off the Mat

Articles for Athletic Trainers and News Stories

On the sidelines of BYU Cheer practice, as athletes flip, stunt, and prepare for game-day performances, Amberly Perrins quietly watches—ready to step in at a moment’s notice.

She also balances responsibilities with the BYU women’s tennis team, adapting daily to the unique demands of each sport.

“It’s really fun,” Perrins said. “There are a lot of differences between the two teams… so it keeps me on my toes.”

But for Perrins, the job goes far beyond physical care.

“My desire is for my athletes to know that… there is always somebody who is going to love them and care about them,” she said.

That support often extends into mental and emotional well-being. Perrins creates a space where athletes feel safe—sometimes as simple as offering snacks and a listening ear during difficult moments.

“If I had to go back to school, it would be in some form of mental performance therapy,” she said.

Her impact is perhaps most visible during the toughest recoveries. Perrins recalled one athlete who battled injuries all season, pushing through frustration and setbacks before finally returning to compete on the national stage.

“Watching them perform for the first time after that, I had tears,” she said.

For Perrins, those moments make it all worthwhile.

“When I have those good moments, it’s a 10 out of 10.”

While fans focus on performances, Perrins remains focused on something deeper—helping athletes heal, grow, and return to what they love. Check out the full story here!
