Building a Team Behind the Scenes: Sheridan High School’s Student Athletic Trainers

Articles for Athletic Trainers and News StoriesAt Sheridan High School in Wyoming, Athletic Trainer Joanne Goss has created a unique environment that not only supports the school’s athletes but also inspires students to join her team of student trainers.

Goss AT at SheridanWith a passion for mentoring, Goss welcomes all students, offering them hands-on experience in athletic training.

“I like giving kids a place to land. If this is a good fit for them, then come on.”

Goss manages a demanding schedule, overseeing multiple sports like football, volleyball, and swimming. Her student trainers play a crucial role, ensuring athletes are hydrated and assisting with first aid.

“They help with hydration, taping ankles, and making sure water is available at all practices.”

Student trainers like JoeJoe Bennett and Dani Grooms found their calling through personal experiences. Bennett, who became a trainer after Goss helped him recover from a growth plate injury, said:

“Joanne got me to a good doctor. Without her, I wouldn’t have had surgery when I needed it.”

Grooms, initially joining to support her brother, stayed for the invaluable lessons and strong connection with Goss.

For Goss, the job goes beyond treating injuries; it’s about building relationships.

“I see them every day, from injury through recovery. Being a caring adult they can talk to is really important."

Through Goss’s mentorship, student trainers learn critical skills like communication and empathy, preparing them for future careers in healthcare. As Bridgette Price puts it:

“The opportunity to help teammates and gain real experience is something not many places offer.”
