Celebrating 30 Years: Susan Cabbage, The Heartbeat of Logan Athletics
In La Crosse, Wisconsin, Logan Athletics has had an unsung hero in their midst for over 30 years – Susan Cabbage. This dedicated Certified Athletic Trainer has been on the frontlines, ensuring athletes are in prime form and helping them through their recovery journeys after an injury.
While she's officially a Gundersen Health System staff member, her relationship with Logan runs deep.
Susan moved to La Crosse after college to stay close to family. But it's the success of the young athletes and the camaraderie with the coaches that has kept her rooted. Cabbage shared:
“The kids that I deal with, you want to see them go through and graduate."
The bonds she has built with the coaching staff are also deeply rooted, with some spanning the entirety of her tenure.
On any typical day, Susan is meticulously taping ankles, guiding students through their rehabilitation, or assessing new injuries. As she reflected on her three-decade-long journey in this story, she noted the evolution of the field:
“Even just taking care of injuries has changed. Concussion care has completely changed from what we used to do. There have been a lot of improvements, a lot of changes, and for the good.”
Ankle injuries are a common sight. However, she has observed a surge in knee problems, with three Rangers facing ACL tears in the past year alone.
The most harrowing experience she recalls involves a football player from over a decade ago. The athlete sustained an open tib-fib fracture, a gruesome injury where the bone protrudes through the skin. Her swift response and calming presence during this critical incident showcased her unwavering commitment to her role.
Injuries, unfortunately, are an inevitable part of sports. But with experts like Susan on the scene, athletes are in safe hands.
Logan Activities Director, Tony Servais, couldn't stress enough the invaluable contribution of Athletic Trainers like Cabbage. He stated:
“Having consistency with Susan here makes a world of difference.”
That sentiment was echoed by Joe La Mere, Supervisor of Gundersen's Athletic Training Outreach Program, who has been side by side with Susan for nearly all her 30 years at Logan. While Gundersen partners with 28 schools, Susan's unwavering commitment stands out.
"To have somebody like Susan who’s been at a school for 30 years is pretty neat."
Beyond her professional contributions, Susan's relationship with the community is deeply personal. Notably, she was the maid of honor at La Mere's wedding. This intertwining of personal and professional relationships exemplifies Susan's dedication. As she herself said:
“I love Logan High School, hence I’m still here 30 years later. This is a family here. They truly treat everyone here as part of the family.”
Three decades on, and Susan Cabbage remains an emblem of resilience, dedication, and heart for Logan Athletics. Here's to many more years of her unwavering support and the legacy she's building!
