Celebrating NATM: Honoring Augusta University’s Unsung Heroes

Articles for Athletic Trainers and News Stories

March marks National Athletic Training Month, a time to recognize the critical work of Athletic Trainers across the country.

Augusta University Athletic Training StaffAt Augusta University, that commitment is embodied by Lisa Cummins, assistant director for sports medicine; Bonni Messner, associate athletic trainer; and Brooke Gandy, assistant athletic trainer.

Behind every successful Jaguar Athletics performance, they are the ones keeping nearly 300 student-athletes healthy, both physically and mentally.

“To run a successful program, you really need to have a relationship with the training staff and you have to have trust,” said Sharon Quarles, head volleyball coach. "A belief system that you know they get it, they understand, and we need athletes performing at a high level."

For student-athletes like basketball player Autumn Phillips, that trust is deeply personal. After breaking her collarbone this season, it was Messner who stepped in.

“She was just calming me down and giving me information on what could be happening and just brightening up my spirits,” said Phillips. "She's kind of like, I don’t want to say a therapist, but she’s someone I can talk to."

Athletic Trainers now do more than just treat injuries—they create safe, open spaces for athletes to address emotional well-being.

“I think that’s what our trainers have done—make it a comfortable space for them to talk about their mental health and emotional health,” said Melissa Brocato, head softball coach.

Their dedication extends long after games end, especially with new stadium lights prolonging practices.

“They were here last night at nine p.m.,” said head basketball coach Dip Metress. "They do a great job."

Even therapy dogs Loch and Lorna play a role.

“As minor as just saying hi to a furry friend, it’s welcome,” added Quarles.

Augusta University is proud to honor Cummins, Messner, and Gandy—three Athletic Trainers making a lasting impact on Jaguar Athletics. Check out the full story here!
