Scott Johnson Retires After 37 Years at Old Dominion University

Articles for Athletic Trainers and News Stories

After nearly four decades of unwavering service, Scott Johnson is retiring from Old Dominion University, closing a remarkable 37-year career in athletic training and sports medicine.

Scott JohnsonJohnson began his journey as a standout wide receiver at Bridgewater State but found his calling off the field—helping student-athletes as an Athletic Trainer.

Johnson joined ODU in 1988 and has been a cornerstone of the Monarchs’ athletic program ever since.

From his early days as the men’s basketball Athletic Trainer to serving as Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine, his influence shaped ODU’s sports medicine department into one of the top programs among mid-major schools.

Under his leadership, the athletic training staff grew from three to 11 professionals to meet expanding NCAA demands and year-round team schedules.

“Scott has been a steady hand in helping us to keep up with the times,” said ODU Athletic Director Dr. Wood Selig. “When someone leaves after that long, it’s like losing a member of the family.”

Known for his humility and devotion, Johnson said his greatest memories are the individual athletes he helped succeed, such as Odell Hodge’s return from injury to score his 2,000th point.

“My favorite memories are of individuals… seeing them succeed. I just enjoyed watching our athletes excel.”

Though Johnson is stepping away from ODU, his impact remains. Elizabeth Jones, formerly of William & Mary, is stepping into the role with admiration for her predecessor:

“I have big shoes to fill.”

At 60, Johnson plans to spend more time with his wife, Elana, their sons, and their first grandchild.

“Maybe I’ll travel a bit,” he said. “But mostly, I think it’s time to spend with my family.”

Johnson leaves a legacy of compassion, professionalism, and decades of dedication to ODU Athletics. Check out the full story here
