From Injury to Impact: Paulina Torres Helps Lead UTRGV Football Into Historic Debut

Articles for Athletic Trainers and News Stories

A devastating injury became a defining moment in Paulina Torres’ life. During her sophomore year playing volleyball for the Lady Bulldogs, Torres tore her ACL—an experience that unexpectedly ignited a passion for Athletic Training.

“To think that if that injury did not happen, it changed the whole trajectory of my career,” she reflected. “I enjoy being an Athletic Trainer and helping athletes get back on their feet.”

Paulina TorresTorres began shadowing Athletic Trainer Mario Saldivar at Alexander High School, gaining valuable hands-on experience. But it was a summer camp at Texas State University that sealed her decision.

“When I came back from that summer camp, I knew that I wanted to become an Athletic Trainer,” she said.

Though she originally planned to complete her basics in Laredo, Torres ultimately enrolled full-time at Texas State, thanks in large part to the support of her mother, Rosa.

“I would not be here without my mom,” Torres said. “She has been with me every step of the way.”

After earning her doctorate from Indiana State in 2023, Torres joined the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley as an associate Athletic Trainer. This fall, she will help make history as UTRGV football plays its first-ever game on August 30.

“I have been honored and proud to have been part of the process,” she said. “We are excited, and the whole process has been rewarding.”

From injury to inspiration, Torres’ journey reflects the powerful impact one Athletic Trainer can have—both on and off the field. Check out the full story here
