From Schoolmates to Rival Benches: The Journey of Two ATs

Baseball, as they say, is a game of inches — a near-miss at home plate or a ball just short of a home run — and it can dictate the difference between happiness and heartbreak.

Between the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers, a rivalry known as the Lone Star Series, there exists a delicate line that separates friendly competition from fierce dominance.

Yet, with two close teams fighting fierce battles on the field, two people from these teams find themselves bound by a special connection.

Eric Velazquez and Sean Fields, assistant Athletic Trainers for the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers, are not just counterparts in rival teams.

Their shared journey began at Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA), where both graduated from the Master of Science in athletic training program in May 2010.

Over the years, their paths occasionally intersected in the minor leagues. Today, they meet more frequently, given their teams' are in the same division. Their interactions vary, from a simple nod to extended catch-ups in centerfield.

Velazquez, still basking in the glory of the Astros' 2022 World Series win, described his first major league season as "surreal". He credits SFA's hands-on approach in the athletic training program for preparing him for the rigorous demands of his career.

As the Astros battle for another championship title, Velazquez acknowledges the hard-fought journey of the team.

Fields, on the other hand, is living his dream with the Rangers.

Starting as an intern, his passion and commitment saw him climb the ranks to his current role.

The possibility of the Rangers clinching their first-ever World Series win is tantalizingly close, and Fields believes they have the right mix to make it a reality.

Despite their allegiances, both Fields and Velazquez are testament to the success of SFA’s Master of Science in athletic training program.

Dr. Judy Abbott, dean of SFA’s James I. Perkins College of Education, speaks proudly of the program and its role in shaping successful professionals like Eric and Sean.

In the high-stakes world of pro baseball, their success stories stand out, reminding us that beyond the rivalry and competition, there are bonds of friendship and shared journeys.
