Long Beach Native Bautista Supports Hometown Athletes as Millikan Athletic Trainer

Articles for Athletic Trainers and News StoriesPrior to the 2023-24 school year, the Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) made a significant move by appointing full-time, certified Athletic Trainers at its high schools.

A Long Beach native and Jordan Panther alumna, Bautista earned her bachelor’s degree in athletic training from California State University, Long Beach, and a master’s in kinesiology from Cal Baptist University.

Initially set on a career in college athletics, she spent three years at Cal State Dominguez Hills, including a notable trip to the NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Elite Eight in 2023. However, the sense of community she longed for was missing due to extensive travel.

“When traveling with the team, it’s hard to create a culture where you’re working, where I can make connections with students and build stronger relationships with multiple coaches.”

The full-time position at Millikan offered her the opportunity to connect deeply with the school community.

“We only get one body.”

Millikan athletic director Kacey Mendoza praised her impact:

“Vivian has been such an important addition to Millikan’s athletic program. She’s a true team player, and the athletes absolutely love her.”

Bautista’s strong relationships with coaches, like boys’ soccer head coach Jeff Schofield, further underscore her value to the Millikan community.

“Our relationship is solely based on trust.”

Bautista’s transition to the high school level has been a mutually beneficial decision, enhancing both her career satisfaction and the well-being of Millikan’s athletes.
