The Athletic Trainer Behind the Scenes at Mill Valley High School

In a report by Ryan Bloomer for the news website of Mill Valley High School in Shawnee, Kansas, Athletic Trainer Jacob Brownback is highlighted as a key figure in keeping student-athletes healthy, prepared, and performing at their best.
From taping athletes before practice to tracking injuries and coordinating with coaches, Brownback’s work reaches far beyond game time.
“Practice and games are only a very small part of being an athlete,” Brownback said.
Much of his role centers on preparation and detailed medical tracking.
“Documentation is a big thing in the health industry. Making sure that we’re all caught up on injuries and what those look like, checking in with coaches and making sure they know who’s available.”
As the school’s only Athletic Trainer, Brownback works with every team and has built strong relationships with the athletes he serves. Senior cross country runner Jordan Schierbaum regularly visits him for treatment and recovery support.
“I go once every three weeks or so to get a cupping,” Schierbaum said. “I’ve always had a lot of little nicks, but he gives me stretches and exercises to recover from those.”
Schierbaum also praised Brownback’s impact.
“Having a professional eye on what you’re going through is really nice,” he said. “[Brownback is] a great guy… he does a lot for the school’s athletics programs. I appreciate him a lot.”
