Meet Kona Bear: IU's Director of Athlete Wellness and Happiness

Articles for Athletic Trainers and News StoriesIf you browse the Indiana Hoosiers Athletic Staff Directory, you might come across a particularly special listing—Kona Bear, Director of Athlete Wellness and Happiness.

Kona BearBut Kona isn’t your typical staff member; she’s a three-and-a-half-year-old Bordoodle who has become an integral part of the Indiana Volleyball team.

Entering her third season with the Hoosiers, Kona is more than just a friendly face—she’s a trained service dog specializing in spotting and treating anxiety while also serving as an emotional support animal.

Initially a comforting presence at Wilkinson Hall, she quickly became a vital part of the team, officially earning her title.

“Kona’s ability to build relationships and bring a sense of calm to the gym—and, most importantly, to our athletes—is what makes her so valuable to our program,” the team shared.

Over the past two years, she has left a lasting impact on players, staff, and visitors alike. She thrives in the high-energy atmosphere of volleyball, whether she’s playing with her own volleyballs on the court or offering a reassuring presence after a tough match.

Kona loves ice cubes, chilly weather, and beach trips back to California. She also spends plenty of time in the training room with her favorite support staff member, Athletic Trainer Amanda Madsen.

Simply put, Kona embodies what it means to be a Hoosier—loyal, hardworking, and always bringing joy. See her listing here
