NJCU’s Karla Mejia Joins NCAA Inclusivity Efforts

Articles for Athletic Trainers and News StoriesKarla Mejia, Head Athletic Trainer and Senior Woman Administrator at New Jersey City University, has been appointed to the NCAA's Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee (MOIC), a significant recognition that underscores her dedication to promoting inclusivity in collegiate athletics.

Karla MejiaHer four-year tenure on the committee will start on September 1, 2024, and she will also participate in the 2024 NCAA Division III Inclusive Leaders Facilitator Program at the NCAA Headquarters in Indianapolis this coming June.

Mejia expressed her gratitude for the opportunity, noting the importance of the platform provided by the MOIC in championing the causes of ethnic minorities within the NCAA.

"I am extremely grateful and blessed to be part of the NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee. As a minority working at a University with students and student-athletes like myself, having this platform and opportunity is very meaningful and significant to me."

NJCU's Director of Athletics, Robert Cole, also commented on Mejia’s recent achievements, highlighting her role as a national advocate for student-athletes.

"We are extremely proud of Karla and her continued progression as our Head Athletic Trainer and SWA. With her appointment to the MIOC, as well as her acceptance into the Inclusive Leaders Facilitators Program, Karla will be an advocate and asset for our student-athletes at the national level."

He also praised the efforts of the entire athletic department in supporting their mission and student-athletes, acknowledging the recognition from professional organizations and the NCAA as validation of their impactful leadership on campus.

Mejia’s roles and recognition represent a significant stride toward fostering an inclusive environment that promotes fair and equitable access to opportunities and resources for all student-athletes, reflecting a broader commitment to diversity and inclusion within the sports community and beyond.
