Thomas Malone Named Head Athletic Trainer for Alaska Nanooks

The Alaska Nanooks are bringing in experienced leadership to guide their sports medicine program, naming Thomas Malone as the university’s new head Athletic Trainer.
Malone joins the University of Alaska Fairbanks after five seasons at Troy University, where he worked closely with track & field and cross country athletes.
In that role, he provided comprehensive medical care, developed Emergency Action Plans, and collaborated with coaches, physicians, and administrators to support athlete health and performance.
“I am excited to begin this new chapter… and look forward to providing exceptional care while helping elevate the health and performance of its elite student-athletes,” Malone said.
His experience spans multiple levels of competition. Prior to Troy, Malone worked at the University of Missouri and served as the lead for COVID-19 response efforts, managing protocols for tracing and return-to-play. Earlier in his career, he was the head Athletic Trainer at Vigor High School, overseeing care for all athletes while managing logistics, budgets, and medical coordination.
Malone’s background also includes time as a graduate assistant at Eastern Illinois and an internship with the Detroit Lions, adding to a well-rounded career in Athletic Training.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Thomas,” said Director of Athletics Brock Anundson. “His experience and forward-thinking vision align seamlessly with the future we’re building.”
Now, Malone steps into his new role ready to support Nanooks student-athletes and elevate care across the program. Check out the full story here!
