Quick Reaction by Clayton High School Athletic Trainer Saves Life

Articles for Athletic Trainers and News StoriesIn the fiercely competitive world of sports, where every goal, every blocked shot, and every touchdown feels significant, sometimes the hero is standing off to the side. And occasionally, their heroic act doesn't happen during the big game but during a quiet practice.

That's what happened in Clayton, Missouri last week.

Amra Kardasevic Athletic Trainer at Clayton High School in Missouri 3Amra Kardasevic, Clayton High School's Athletic Trainer, is always present to help treat the minor injuries of their student-athletes.

But on one special day, she went above and beyond.

Speaking about her professional aspirations, Kardasevic revealed:

"I had dreams of becoming a doctor, but I yearned for a more personal connection."

This connection was tested during a regular soccer practice when 18-year-old senior Brandon Wooten began experiencing discomfort, a struggle to breathe, and blurry vision.

The situation escalated, and Kardasevic's rigorous training under the Mercy Sports Medicine Athletic Trainer program instinctively kicked in.

"When he mentioned chest pain, I immediately fetched my supplemental oxygen tank and called 911."

Lieutenant Tim Stolte of the Clayton Fire Department highlighted the gravity of Kardasevic's timely response:

"Without her early recognition, the day could have turned out very differently."

Wooten was transported to St. Louis Children's Hospital. During his time there, Steve Hutson, Clayton High's Athletic Director, was informed by doctors about the significance of Kardasevic's intervention, which they considered pivotal in saving the young athlete's life.

For Wooten, who had been passionately playing soccer for eight years, this incident was a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of life. He stated:

"The value of athletic trainers cannot be understated. Situations like mine highlight the uncertainty of the field, and in such times, a skilled trainer can be the difference between life and death."

However, for Kardasevic, it wasn't about being inspotlight.

"Although I hope to never witness such an event again, knowing I made a difference in Brandon's life brings a profound sense of gratitude."

Kardasevic's actions have hopefully etched her name into the history of Clayton High School.

Her heroic act underscores the pivotal role of athletic trainers in safeguarding the well-being of these young athletes.

Athletic Trainers need to not only be available for every game, but every practice. Many times, the most profound triumphs in sports occur away from the spotlight, in the quiet corners of the field when few are cheering them on.
