Steve Smith: The AT Behind Michigan's Championship Quest

Articles for Athletic Trainers and News StoriesWhen it comes to the field of athletic training, documentation is everything. Steve Smith, a 2019 Indiana State University Doctorate of Athletic Training (DAT) graduate, is a strong believer in the crucial role of documentation for sports injuries.

And while many of us at Healthy Roster would prefer to see The Ohio State Buckeyes headed to the championship, we do agree with Steve when it comes to documenting!

Steve Smith Michigan Athletic TrainerSmith has played a pivotal role in the University of Michigan football team's journey to the big game in Houston.

As one of nine athletic trainers for the undefeated Wolverines, Smith has been instrumental in prepping the team for their showdown against the University of Washington Huskies in the national championship.

Smith's journey in athletic training began in 2006 and has seen him working with teams at Notre Dame, Eastern Michigan University, and Grand Valley State University.

His tenure at Michigan, now in its fifth year, has been marked by a deep commitment to the athletes.

"Athletic Trainers wear many different hats. We build relationships with athletes while helping them play their best."

At Indiana State, Smith's pursuit of a DAT degree was a blend of online education and hands-on campus learning. The program's focus on patient-centered, clinically expert practice aligned perfectly with Smith's approach to athletic training, fostering his growth as a professional.

"Indiana State pushed me as an Athletic Trainer to think about the profession in a different way."

Smith's expertise is not just limited to injury treatment. He has a particular interest in athletic training documentation, a crucial yet often overlooked aspect of sports medicine.

"Documenting injuries can lead to more accurate injury reports. When there are multiple Athletic Trainers, it’s important to work together and communicate effectively so everyone is on the same page when addressing these injuries."

Smith’s research in the DAT program focused on documentation. He has even provided educational lectures on the importance of documenting. He also acknowledges that athletic training staff members have such busy schedules, which can cause documentation to be neglected

Michigan Head Coach Jim Harbaugh has lauded Smith and the training staff for their dedication. "It was an incredible effort by our training staff," Harbaugh praised, acknowledging the significant contribution of trainers like Smith.

Smith's comprehensive approach to athletic training – from injury prevention and treatment to documentation and relationship-building – is a testament to his dedication to student-athletes' well-being.

As he stands on the sidelines in Houston, his focus will be on ensuring the players' health and celebrating their successes... along with hope of witnessing a championship.
