The Kilt-Wearing Athletic Trainer Transforming Lives in Virginia

Articles for Athletic Trainers and News StoriesKwadwo Donkor, an Athletic Trainer at Staunton High School in Virginia, brings a unique flair to his profession, not just in his expertise but also in his choice of attire!

Kwadwo Donkor 1Known for almost always wearing a kilt, Donkor sees it as more than a fashion statement; it's a conversation starter and an educational tool about cultural diversity. "I'm surprised that didn't come up earlier," he said with a laugh, acknowledging the curiosity it sparks among students.

Born in Farmville, Virginia, and raised in a healthcare-focused family, Donkor's journey to athletic training wasn't straightforward.

After an injury derailed his college football aspirations at Bridgewater College, he discovered the field, which fascinated him enough to switch majors. He began his career at Fishburne Military School in Waynesboro before moving to Staunton in 2017.

Donkor's impact at Staunton goes beyond treating physical injuries. Staunton principal Tammy Lightner praises his approach:

"Kwadwo Donkor goes above and beyond in his work here at Staunton as an educator and Athletic Trainer."

He engages students with real-life scenarios in his sports medicine classes and provides shadowing opportunities at sporting events.

His days are varied and filled with responsibilities, from teaching to preparing for games, ensuring the athletes' well-being. Emmy Burks, a volleyball coach and physical therapist, speaks highly of Donkor's intelligence and caring nature.

"He just really cares about their well-being, their safety."

Kwadwo Donkor 2Donkor's commitment extends to addressing broader health issues like blood sugar problems, hygiene, skin disorders, and psychosocial concerns.

He collaborates with school counselors to provide comprehensive support to students. His ability to connect with students on a personal level allows him to identify issues early and provide timely interventions.

Former students like Emma Witt reflect on his lasting impact:

"He’s the best. He always made sure that I was OK... He’ll always be a friend."

Donkor cherishes these relationships:

"There are still students who have graduated and I still get to talk to."

Inspired by his father's legacy as a pulmonologist who touched many lives, Donkor aspires to make a similar impact in Staunton. He aims to be a positive force in the community, remembered not only for his professional skills but also for his distinctive kilt and the light he brings to those around him.
