Two cornerstones of the University of North Alabama’s sports medicine team were honored at the 2025 Alabama Athletic Trainers’ Association (ALATA) Clinical Symposium and Members Meeting in Trussville, Alabama.

Dr. Jeff Hovater, orthopedic specialist with the North Alabama Bone & Joint Clinic, received the Dr. Jimmy Robinson Sports Medicine Person of the Year award.

“Josh and Dr. Hovater are pillars of the UNA sports medicine team,” said UNA Director of Athletics Josh Looney. “They’ve cared for thousands of student-athletes and set the standard for recovery and return-to-play practices. We’re proud to see them honored.”

Penny has led the UNA sports medicine department since 2003 and primarily serves the football program while overseeing care for all sports.

“I would not be in this position without the hard work and dedication of my staff, both past and present,” said Penny. “It’s an honor to receive this recognition from the ALATA.”

Dr. Hovater, a Florence native, has supported UNA Athletics for decades and trained under the legendary Dr. James Andrews. He joined North Alabama Bone & Joint Clinic in 2008.

“Collaborating with UNA’s athletic trainers and medical staff is incredibly rewarding,” Hovater said. “I’m proud to be part of a team that prioritizes both performance and long-term health.”
