A new enforcement initiative will protect workers from indoor and outdoor heat.
Here’s what you should know:
- The initiative prioritizes heat-related interventions and inspections of work activities on days when the heat index exceeds 80℉.
- It applies to indoor and outdoor worksites in general industry, construction, agriculture and maritime occupations.
- Employers who fail to protect workers from heat-related illnesses may be subject to citations under the OSH Act’s General Duty Clause.
- Employers are encouraged to use intervention methods on heat priority days, including regularly taking breaks for water, rest and shade, and training workers on how to identify common symptoms.
- In addition to this initiative, OSHA intends to pursue additional actions through FY 2022, including a potential national emphasis program.
