Workplace Injury Statistics 2021

September 23, 2021

As we help industrial companies prevent and filter out musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) to reduce costs and lost work time, we wanted to share our research on workplace injuries.

Here are some fast facts:

  • Nonfatal Workplace Injuries Resulting In Days Away From WorkAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, sprains, strains, and tears are the most common non-fatal workplace injury.

  • In 2019, the incidence rate of total recordable cases (TRC) in private industry was 2.8 cases per 100 full time equivalent (FTE) workers, which was the rate reported in 2018 and 2017.

  • The incidence rate of days away from work (DAFW) cases was 0.9 cases per 100 FTE workers and the incidence rate of days of job transfer and restriction only (DJTR) cases was 0.7 cases per 100 FTE workers, which were the rates reported in 2018. This means, for most companies, that safety efforts have plateaued and new measure may be required.

  • There were 888,220 nonfatal injuries and illnesses that caused a private industry worker to miss at least one day of work in 2019.

  • Injuries and illnesses to manufacturing workers resulted in 32,470 DAFW cases of sprains, strains, or tears (28.0%) and 16,790 cases of soreness or pain (14.5%)

  • The median number of days away from work in private industry in 2019 was 8 days, the same as 2018.

  • The median days for maintenance and repair workers, general; and laborers and freight, stock, and material movers, had increased to 12 days in 2019 from 10 days in 2018.

  • Private industry workers with sprains, strains, or tears resulting in days away from work visited medical treatment facilities at a rate of 6.5 cases per 10,000 FTE workers in 2019.

  • An estimated 2.4 million workers sustained work-related injuries and were treated in emergency departments during 2019.

  • In 2019, the rate of emergency department-treated, work-related injuries was estimated at 156 per 10,000 full-time equivalent workers.

Days Away From Work, per MSD:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome (median of 30 days)
  • Tendonitis (median of 14 days)
  • Strains, tears, and sprains (median of 11 days)
  • Multiple traumatic injuries (median of 9 days)
  • Soreness or pain (median of 8 days)
  • Multiple sprains with injuries (median of 7 days)

  • 32% of nonfatal injuries resulting in days away from work were treated in emergency room in 2019.
  • Of the estimated 285,240 private industry workers who were treated in an emergency room (ER) following a nonfatal workplace injury, 47,280 cases were musculoskeletal disorders (also known as ergonomic injuries.)
