Delaware Law Creates Funding for Every School to Have Athletic Trainer
In a significant move for school athletics and student welfare in Delaware, their House Education Committee has approved House Bill 244, which aims to provide funding for a full-time Athletic Trainer in every public high school.
Sponsored by Rep. Mike Smith, R-Pike Creek, the bill highlights the crucial role of Athletic Trainers in promoting student safety, wellness, and mental health.
“They promote student safety and wellness, they enhance the entire school community."
He also pointed out the cost benefits for families, reducing the need for hospital visits and guiding students in mental health and substance abuse prevention.
Smith cited the life-saving actions of Athletic Trainers in high-profile cases like Buffalo Bills’ safety Damar Hamlin and Bronny James, son of LeBron James, who both suffered cardiac arrests during sports events. Their recoveries were credited to the prompt and professional care of Athletic Trainers.
The bill proposes a phased funding rollout over three years, with priority given to schools having the highest participation in sports.
Rep. Ed Osienski, D-Newark, suggested ensuring the bill allows all students, not just athletes, to access the trainer’s services.
The committee unanimously voted to release the bill to the full House floor for consideration.
This progressive step by the Delaware House Education Committee reflect a growing recognition of the importance of comprehensive student support, both in and out of the classroom.
