Rising Demand for Athletic Trainers: Dispelling the Shortage Myth
Over the past couple of decades, the field of athletic training has undergone significant expansion. Originating in the realm of college athletics, these professionals have progressively made their mark in orthopedics and other medical settings.
Yet, there's a common misconception that suggests there may be a growing shortage of Athletic Trainers, particularly in the orthopedics sector.
However, leading voices in the industry beg to differ.
Kathy Dieringer, EdD, LAT, ATC, and president of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA), addressed this error head-on.
Dieringer emphasized that there is no shortage of Athletic Trainers.
She pointed out that data from NATA's board of certification projects that by the end of 2023, the number of athletic trainers would be at an all-time high.
So, why the perceived gap?
Dieringer believes that the seeming shortage in the orthopedics domain stems from the myriad of opportunities now accessible to ATs.
Today, these healthcare providers are not confined to traditional sports settings but have expanded their reach. Recent trends indicate a surge in demand for Athletic Trainers in industrial settings and notably within the armed forces. In fact, the armed forces currently have 400 open positions for AT roles.
Dieringer emphasized the competitiveness of the athletic training profession.
“Athletic trainers have a plethora of avenues to apply their skills. This versatility is making the profession more competitive, parallel to other health care sectors.”
Backing her observations with empirical data, Dieringer referenced a recent survey conducted by NATA members. The results underscored three paramount themes resonating with athletic trainers: time, money, and respect.
Notably, the findings revealed an encouraging trend – an 8% spike in the salaries of Athletic Trainers between 2018 and 2021. And that upward trajectory is expected to keep going.
Dieringer's insights present a bigger picture of the evolving athletic training landscape.
“This is an era where Athletic Trainers are in abundance. But it’s crucial to note that their choices are becoming more discerning. While patient care remains at the heart of their profession, self-care, value recognition, appropriate remuneration, and a conducive work culture are becoming pivotal considerations.”
In essence, the athletic training industry is not facing a shortage.
Instead, it's witnessing a paradigm shift where Athletic Trainers are strategically aligning their skills with opportunities that offer growth, both personally and professionally.
