We are so glad you asked! The fine folks over at EHS Today just published an interesting article that talks about that very subject — in "The Wild, Wonderful World of Manufacturing Ergonomics" — written by a certified, licensed athletic trainer!
He does a great job of pointing out that work in manufacturing involves repetitive motion, forceful exertion, and sustained (and sometimes awkward) body positioning that can lead to sprains, strains, aches and pains.
Check out the article when you get a chance; it is very informative. If you don't have time to read it, we'll at least give you the five positions to watch out for when it comes to keeping your workers safe:
- Arms above the head
- Twisting back movements
- Forward bending
- Non-neutral wrists
- Frequent kneeling & squatting
We also love this quote from the article:
"As safety professionals and company leaders, we know that it is in everyone’s best interest to identify these issues. This point is front and center with ergonomics concerns. They are generally considered low priority items yet are some of the most expensive injuries encountered in the workplace. A proactive approach is core to accomplishing your ergonomic goals. Here are some tips to bring this all together."
