What CFOs get wrong when trying to reduce Workers' Comp costs

September 9, 2021

shutterstock_1867360309Ask the CFO of any manufacturing business, transportation company, construction firm, or industrial company how to lower Workers' Comp insurance premiums and you'll get a handful of answers — most revolve around reviewing for open claims, fighting frivolous claims, cutting medical costs, and requiring worker drug testing.

Companies end up paying increases in premiums every time they submit a claim. Every time. For every dollar that the insurance company spends on the the WC claim, CFOs will end up paying premium increases between 150% and 200% within 2-3 years of each claim.

Of course there is a huge push to reduce these costs — this insurance is likely their 2nd or 3rd largest expense after payroll.

But is the answer to lock the barn door after the horse is gone? Yes, that's a really old saying! But it makes sense when it comes to how most CFOs answer the "cutting costs" question.

Why Safety is a Four Letter Word
The reason why they don't try to lock that door before the horse escapes is that it hasn't worked as well in the past.

Companies have traditionally tried by focusing on safety. And there has been a decrease in workplace incidents once safety became a huge push across all industrial companies.

But Workers' Comp claims keep going up. So the answer MUST be fighting petty claims and trying to lower medical costs.

Well, not really. By implementing a culture of safety, many accidents and injuries (falls, shocks, being struck) really were reduced. Safety meetings and warning signs and training did help. A lot.

But the real problem is that the majority of all workplace injuries and claims come from musculoskeletal disorders — those aches, pains, and strains that results from overexertion and repetitive motion.

69% of all work injuries, in fact, are MSDs.

The secret sauce to reducing WC premiums that only a few CFOs know about...
Work Injury Triage and PreventionEver watch your favorite pro team or even your kid's sporting event and see a team of people rush onto the court or field to check on an injured player?

Those are athletic trainers. Highly-skilled healthcare professionals who are experts in MSDs — the sprains and pains from physical movement — and who know how to triage, treat, and even prevent injuries.

The smart CFOs tried bringing industrial athletic trainers into their facilities to act as a filter between workers and the expensive Workers' Comp claims.

That's because athletic trainers are able to give personalized advice on strengthening, stretching, and flexing for each employee and the tasks they performed. They review minor pains and help stop them from becoming worse (and more expensive) pains. And those who were injured enough that they might need to go to the ER or their doctor (which creates a claim!), these athletic trainers triage them and only send through those who needed to go.

And that sort of, kind of made sense. But if you have multiple shifts and more than one location, it didn't make good fiscal sense. An AT onsite every day, each shift, and every location? That would never work...

The dream scenario for reducing claims and cutting costs
The smartest of the smart CFOs are taking advantage of what very few even know about!

They use a powerful tech program like the one offered by Healthy Roster called Virtual Injury Prevention. It gives employees access to industrial athletic trainers and MSD experts 24/7 to cover every shift and location and worker.

We give your workers access to our telehealth platform, which includes our mobile app, kiosk and hotline.

  • 24/7 Access to Live Athletic Trainers
  • Triage Injuries Onsite
  • Avoid Costly ER Visits
  • Prevent MSDs
  • Scheduled Follow-Ups to Extend Care

Since most work injuries are MSDs, VIP is your filter against excessive claims and higher premiums. We use triage and prevention to reduce the number of employees needing to go through any nurse hotline or occupational health partner — which involve expensive claims.

Don’t worry about getting rid of any of your established services — simply insert us in front of them to save money.

So close that barn door and keep your horses at home.

With Healthy Roster. Talk to us today and save tomorrow. Pilot programs can start at your location with the most injuries and you can see amazing results within a month or two.
